Me? I "can" write anywhere. I prefer to write when I can hear myself think, however, 99% of the time I need some background noise. Sometimes it's the TV, but most of the time it's music. Music helps my creative juices flow. Writing when the kids are fighting or whining doesn't go well at all. If I'm writing when that is going on, I have to stop.
For me it's music. I have an audio file of 4 hours of movie themes and other instrumental songs. I love it. It's got the soft quiet stuff for when I write a love scene, and the epic stuff for when I write a battle. It's great.
ReplyDeleteI can write while people are talking, but not if they're talking to me. I don't mind having the TV on, but it sometimes filters its way into my conscience, and then I get distracted. Occasionally my son well let me write while he's awake, though he usually muscles his way between me and the keyboard, and I know it's time to stop. :)
I need peace and quiet. :) I have to lock myself in my room.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other Deborah above. I like to have some noise while writing, but find it impossible to focus if someone is talking TO me.
ReplyDeleteOddly enough I have trouble writing with music on in the background but I do okay when I'm watching TV. I'm a weirdo like that!
ReplyDeleteI need it quiet most of the time..unless I 'm revising. Then I'm okay with soundtracks. :)

I do some of my most creative writing in coffee shops, by hand in an exercise book. In fact I have trained my dog to be a caffe latte dog so I can combine her walks with my need to write in coffee shops. When I am working at the computer I like complete silence.
ReplyDeleteI can work in almost any environment; in fact, i kind of prefer a little background noise. I often leave the TV on as I'm writing. I LOVE writing while listening to music, and some of my best ideas have come from 'watching' a scene play out in my head with an appropriate playlist going on in the background.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I don't like to be bothered. If my husband comes up and tries to talk to me, I get very annoyed very quickly. I have been known to lash out with a "WHAT? WHAT DO YOU WANT? I'M BUSY!!" after either the second interruption or the tenth second of the first interruption.
I have to have some noise in the background, TV, radio, and I've learned to write with interruptions because I have 2 kids. Just so long as everyone in the house is content, I can write.
ReplyDeleteIt depends on what I'm writing. If I'm working on blog posts, general articles, and stuff like that, I can work with noise, although I prefer quiet. But with a five year old, it's rarely quiet. If I'm working on my novel, I work much better in silence, and with no one walking around near me.
ReplyDeleteAs I have a houseful of noise, I have learned to write anywhere with any type of background, otherwise I would never get anything done.

I love all these comments! It shows how different everyone is.
ReplyDeleteDeborah - That's a neat idea - using the different kinds of music. Yes, I know it's time to stop when one of the kids tries to get at the computer or is pulling on me.
Nellee- Ooh, wish I could lock myself in a room.
Deb - I always have to stop when someone talks to me. Apparently I get an annoyed look on my face because they usually stop and ask me what's wrong. I usually respond, "I'm in the middle of a sentence."
Kellie - I'm weird like that too. Sometimes I have the TV and music on. I don't know how my mind stays focused.
Angela - I haven't tried writing to soundtracks. I might have to see how that works for me.
Jill - That's cool. I wish I was able to do that. Maybe when all the kids are in school.
Beckah-Rah - I snap like that too when I'm bothered too much.
Cinders - I like background noise too. I can write with interruptions, but sometimes when the interruptions come every other minute, I have to close the computer and wait.
Nikki - Love how you can't have anyone walking nearby either.
Ctny - I, too, have a household of noise with 5 girls. I have to write to be able to write when there is some noise or I'd never get anything done.
Thank you all for commenting. I love learning about everyone!

If it's too quiet, I can't get anything done. In fact, if I can't hear my two boys playing in the background, things just feel out of place. They are my background noise.
